Course Textbook and Readings

The two textbooks we will use are Wallace and Wolf's Contemporary Sociological Theory and George Ritzer Sociologicl theory. Both books give you an overview of the major theories, but Ritzer provides more autobiographical and historical information. These books are free online and you can download the PDF by clicking red link box below.






The second book we will use in the class is George Ritzer's Sociological Theory 8th Edition. This book does a nice job of giving you some historical information that led to the development of different theoretical perspectives. As noted, Ritzer also provides short Bio's on several major sociological theorist. So you really get a good idea of the context of theoretical thought.


Reference Information
We will also read excerpts from several theorist. I have just put a snapshot of a few articles or additional readings we will also touch on.


Domain Assumptions
Every theory has a base set of domain assumptions this represents their beliefs about the nature of the social world. These assumption relate to what theorist think of human nature, what they they think is the nature of reality, How do we best study the social world, and what constitutes knowledge. A good way remember the domain assumptions is to use the acronym HOME
