Week #3 - Conflict Theory
Week #3 examines the emergence of Conflict Theory. We will examine Karl Marx & the difference between Conflict and Critical Theory. In general conflict theorists look at how society is divided in terms of status or resources. Karl Marx focused on the rise of capitalism and how capitalism as an economic system will ultimately destroy itself. He argued that unchecked economic growth is not sustainable and eventually it will destroy itself. (as it destroys the people in the system) The capitalist system is based on the accqusion of profit. Profit requires cheap labor. The cheaper the labor the better the profit… so there is only one direction for the system to go. The text introduces you to the work of Eric Olin Wright & Neo Marxist Conflict Theories, Ralph Darendorf & Dialectical Conflict, Lewis Coser & Conflict Functionalism, Jurgen Habermas – Critical Theory, C. Wright Mills – The Power Elite, Antonio Gramsci’s – Theory of Ideological Hegemony
Is there a POWER ELITE? How much is too much and how far is too far. In our contemporary society corporations/businesses have the same rights as “people”. In the contemporary society we see the economic concerns have in essence even trumped health concerns. This is where logical fallacies come into play. Marx argued that we have been hoodwinked and bamboozled and lulled into a state of false consciousness. We identify with the capitalist because we want to be them we think we can work our way into this status, so we often ignore clear problems within the system. The only solution is to throw out the whole system and start over with a communal system at its base.
Ideological hegemony (cultural hegemony) = the control of Ideas. The truth is that there is plenty of food, and resources and money for everyone. But capitalism requires a “belief” in scarcity of resources and the unequal distribution of those resources. The cultural institutions support and reinforce these beliefs. We are allowing families to starve, be evicted and die from lack of care, all of which from as Marxian perspective, is simply a social plot by the Bourgeoise to maintain their resources.
Todays youth have embraced Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren who critique the general structure and distribution of resources in society. Contemporary youth see these people as pulling back the veil and exposing the truth about our system. Contemporary Marxists would argue that the stock market is just high stakes gambling designed to benefit some in society over others. They would argue that the entire system is rigged and the workers don’t even realize they are being exploited.

Discussion Question #4: Conflict theory suggests that the society is ordered in terms of competition and conflict. Do you agree with this perspective? Why or Why not? Marx argues that we all exist in a struggle for resources, and other theorists suggest that we struggle for other things like status. Does the Dollar Street website suggest this? C. Wright Mills talks about the power elite. Do you think this group exists? Why or why not? Provide empirical evidence to support your opinions. Do They Rule?!
For several years there was a really great website called THEY RULE.NET. This website was fascinating because it allowed you to examine how elite people and businesses were related. This site provided a good deal of evidence to support Mills argument that there is an interconnected group of elites that "control, influence or determine our social structure. These people have power and influence and they are actually interconnected through a system of boards, universities and favored families. The THEYRULE website is no longer current and it doesn't work for everyone anymore. If the site still works for you I would like you do some networking and make a matrix of your own. This is what a sample matrix looks like. The fatter the person the richer and more connected they are. (fat cats) The website shows how people are connected through corporate boards. Many politicians also serve on these boards. How can they regulate businesses that they have interest in?
If the THEY RULE website doesn't work for you I have provided an alternative assignment for you. You can choose which ever one you want to do. Even if you choose the TheyRule assignment I would like you to check out the Dollar Street website as well. The TheyRule assignment option focuses on what the elite people do the Dollar Street website allows you to compare incomes and living conditions of families around the world. This assignment option ask you to examine the site for patterns interns of income and lifestyle. Are the poor families larger? Where are wealthier families located? Are relative living conditions similar across the world. What types of status seem to correlate to income. I have embedded the website below or you can go directly to their site with the red link..

Can/should social scientist intervene to change the social structure?
Are we living in a state of False Consciousness?
Does this consciousness come from cultural socialization controlled by elites?
Who controls cultural the images and beliefs that influence our lives?
Why don't the poor and lower classes rebel against the system?
What are some of the problems with Marxism or the ideas of Democratic Socialism that emerged from it?

Option Create a Meme* or cartoon related to a theorist. (10 points)
In this current reality many people communicate with images, videos, emogies, and memes. This is a fun assignment where I want you to create a meme related to any theory or theorist we’ve covered in class. This activity demonstrates that you actually understand the spirit of the theory or concept and you are able to apply it the social world. Your meme or cartoon can include people or symbols the related to a theorist or theory. You do not have to use the image of the theorist but you can if you want to.

In this digital age the term has come to mean; an amusing or interesting item (such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online especially through social media… a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users. These images etc. are the “elements of culture” that Dawkins was referring to.
If you create a meme please post it to the last discussion board so your classmates can see it as well.

This is a Daily Show video that examines "class" differences in the age of the Corona virus. Was there a difference in how different groups experienced he COVID crisis. This is an adult themed video, and it does contain explicit language.
Marxist and Critical theorist would say "see, we told you so". Mills would say that these were the people he was talking about.
Unfortunately, it is not really that funny because people in the lower classes were actually more likely to die from Covid-19 due to their lower social status. (And all the characteristics that go along with that.)
